Shutouts rule the day in split for BSB

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TIFFIN -- Two outstanding starts by freshmen pitchers led to two shutouts on Saturday -- one for and against the Heidelberg University baseball team. Cameron Deemer fired a complete game shutout as the Student Princes took the first game, 6-0. ONU's Jack Schaller went 7.2 innings in their 1-0 win to salvage a split.

Heidelberg moved to 16-15 overall, 6-8 in the OAC. The Polar Bears stand at 16-17, 5-9.

Cory Jacobs doubled home Evan Long in the first inning of the opener.

In the fifth, Evan Long sent a two-run double into the left field corner to give HU a 3-0 lead.

Alex Manner hit a two-out single to right, scoring Joe Walton. Manner took a wide turn at first, drawing the attention of the catcher Kyle Schlade. With no one at first, Schlade began to run toward Manner. Opportunistically, Joey Rydzewski sprinted to an unoccupied plate, scoring the fifth run of the game.

Matt Psychas closed the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

All the while, Deemer was dominant. He threw his first collegiate shutout, scattering eight hits. He fanned five.

Defensively, Manner threw out two runners at the plate, including the game's final out. All day long, Parker Fronk was impressive with the glove at first base.

As sharp as Deemer was in the first game, Schaller was as impressive in the second. While ONU only managed to score one run off of Jacobs, making his first collegiate start, Schaller kept HU at bay. The freshman allowed two hits -- both coming consecutively in the third inning.

Schaller departed in the eighth and closer T.J. Storer notched a four-out save.

In the losing effort, Brady Ansara and Marc Ochoa each threw two innings of scoreless relief. Jacobs allowed two hits in five innings of work.

On the day, Joe Walton and Manner each had three hits.

Currently on the outside of the playoff picture, looking in, Heidelberg needs to win and get help in the final two OAC doubleheaders -- at Otterbein and home against Wilmington. This week, HU visits Thomas More on Tuesday before hosting Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday.
