Simun says shutout -- Berg blanks Bulldogs

Box Score

TIFFIN -- Alex Simun and Zach Doran combined for a five-hit shutout as the Heidelberg University baseball team blanked Adrian College, 3-0, on a cold Tuesday in Peaceful Valley. The Berg bats, silent for most of the day, scratched across three two-out runs in the victory.

The win pushed Heidelberg's record to 11-7. The Bulldogs, who received votes in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25 poll, fell to 8-6.

Simun, in his best start of the season, went the 6+ innings -- allowing five hits and two walks. He struck out three. Doran entered in the seventh with two on and nobody out and worked out of the jam. He didn't allow a hit in three Innings of work, picking up his first collegiate save.

Scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, the first two Student Princes were retired by Adrian starter Brian Gubbini. Joey Rydzewski sent a scorching liner to short that short-hopped Adrian All-American Ryan Dorow. The ball caromed away slightly, allowing Rydzewski to narrowly beat Darrow's throw to first. After stealing second, Rydzewski scored on a line-drive base hit down the left field line by Evan Long. Long, who advanced to second on the throw home, scored on a bouncing 0-2 base hit up the middle by Adam Hershberger.

In the seventh, Adrian reliever Jesse Marks retired the first two before walking the bases loaded. After a pitching change, Darrin Shirk drew another walk to force in the third run.

Adrian's best chance came in the seventh. Simun walked the first batter and hit the next. With Simun's pitch count nearing 100, Heidelberg head coach Chad Fitzgerald opted to go to his freshman right-hander, Doran.

On a sacrifice bunt attempt, Doran spun and threw to third to nab the lead runner for the first out. He then induced two ground balls to shortstop that Rydzewski and Long turned into fielder's choices.

INSIDE THE BATTER'S BOX

Long extended his hitting streak to 11 with his base hit in the fifth.

Tuesday was Heidelberg's first shut out of the season. Their last came on May 6, 2016 -- a 9-0 drubbing of Wilmington in last season's penultimate game.

Opposing batters are now hitting .067 off of Doran.

Heidelberg only mustered four hits -- three of which came in the fifth.  Matt Psychas had the other hit.

QUICK HITS WITH FITZ

Chad Fitzgerald on Simun's performance: "Alex has had a lot of success in the past against really good teams and we were just waiting for him to show it, and today was the day ... He seemed to just go out and compete and not be timid, attack the zone."

Fitzgerald on Doran: "He's a competitor on the mound ... He's a shortstop that has pitched really well for us all year."

Fitzgerald on the offense: "Our approach has been to fight and grind, putting good swings on good pitches, to hang in there if things aren't going our way early ... We had some big hits in big opportunities ... Evan and Hershberger have been getting big hits for us for a long time."

ON DECK

The Student Princes return to OAC action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Mount Union. First pitch in Alliance is slated for 1 p.m.
