Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. – With the bright Florida sun sinking toward the horizon, Heidelberg University right fielder Arneal Squibb hit an 0-2 fastball into the gap in left center. The liner allowed Derek Hendrixson to score the go-ahead run in the eighth inning of an 8-7 win over Alvernia University.
Squibb's RBI capped off a late Heidelberg rally and lifted the Student Princes to their second win of the day and their sixth in a row. Heidelberg defeated Olivet College earlier on Saturday, 14-4.
"I let two pitches go by that were pitches I should have hit," said Squibb, a senior who had three hits against Alvernia (0-2). "They challenged me a third time and I didn't miss. I stuck with my approach and drove the ball to left field. "
Heidelberg (6-2) trailed the Crusaders 7-2 in the bottom of the seventh. Showing resolve, the Tricolor plated five runs to tie the contest at seven. With the bases loaded, Joe Staab lined a single to right center, scoring Trevor Oldham and Austin Fleming. After a sacrifice bunt and a walk loaded the bases again, Eric Monroe drew an RBI-hit by pitch, plating Hendrixson. Trailing 7-5 with the bases loaded, Derek Hug sent a grounder to third that went through the legs of the Alvernia third baseman. Staab and Doug Miller scored to knot the game.
The five-run inning marked the 12th time in the first eight games that Heidelberg scored four or more runs in a frame.
Hendrixson, who entered in the eighth, allowed a one-out hit in the ninth, but sealed the game with a pair of strikeouts and a foul out to third.
"It was a great comeback win for us against a very tough team in Alvernia," said 15-year head coach Matt Palm. "I thought Zach O'Driscoll, in his second start after injury, looked much better. "
O'Driscoll worked into the sixth before giving way to Nick Reiter.
Earlier in the day, Adam Manner scattered seven hits and gave up three runs to pick up the win against Olivet (1-2). Freshman Jordan Watson picked up a three-inning save in the 14-4 win.
Trevor Oldham led the Student Princes with three hits. Monroe knocked in five runs, including a bases-loaded triple in the five-run sixth.
In the top half of the second, The Berg plated five runs on two hits. The first two hitters, Hug and Oldham, recorded singles. Adam Hershberger reached on an error, which scored Hug. Andrew Zenczak laid down a sacrifice bunt and Staab walked, loading the bases. Squibb and Steven Morse were each hit by pitches, which plated a pair. Alex Grove drew a walk and Monroe lifted a sacrifice fly to right.
The Tricolor scored two unearned runs in the third and two earned runs in the fifth, taking a commanding 9-1 lead.
Monroe's three-trun triple, which clinked off the chain-link fence in left field, gave Heidelberg a 14-1 lead.
Olivet would score a pair via a home run in the sixth and a single run in the ninth.
"These were real good wins for us," said Palm. "We weren't perfect, but we played together as a team."
Heidelberg has two more games in the warm Florida sunshine before heading back to blustery northwest Ohio. On Sunday, Heidelberg faces Montclair State at noon. On Monday, Palm faces his alma mater, the College of Wooster, at 11 a.m.
