Box Score PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Freshman Derek Hendrixson picked up his first career save as the Heidelberg University baseball team defeated Adrian College 11-5 on Wednesday.
Each player in the lineup had a hit for Heidelberg, led by a three-hit performance by Joe Staab. Steven Morse had three RBIs, one of seven Student Princes with an RBI.
Heidelberg (3-2) struck first as Alex Grove scored on a single by Trevor Oldham in the top of the second.
Adrian (1-2) scored an unearned run off of 'Berg starter Steve Huber in the third, tying the game.
Eric Monroe led off the top of the fourth with a double and scored on a single by Derek Hug. Hug, also a tight end for the Heidelberg football team, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Oldham. Adam Hershberger laced a single to score Hug from third, giving HU a 3-1 lead.
After the Bulldogs plated a run in the bottom of the fourth, Hug ripped a two-out triple to right center, chasing home Morse.
With a rising pitch count, Huber was removed before the bottom of the fifth. After a pair of seeing-eye singles and a walk loaded the bases, reliever Zach O'Driscoll forced two runs across by hitting a batter and walking one. Adam Manner relieved O'Driscoll and struck out the first batter he faced. With two out, Adrian's Mitch Stefanski fouled off several pitches before working an RBI walk, which gave Adrian a 5-4 lead.
Undeterred, Heidelberg regained the lead in the sixth. Andrew Zenczak and Staab singled with one out. An Arneal Squibb walk was followed by a two-run single by Morse.
The Tricolor padded their lead with a pair in the seventh. With two outs, Staab had an RBI infield single and Squibb hit a run-scoring double.
In the ninth, Hershberger walked with one out. Zenczak reached on a bunt single. Staab loaded the bases with a single to center. After Squibb hit an RBI single, Morse drew a walk to plate another run. Grove closed out the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
After a six-inning relief outing on Sunday, Hendrixson worked three scoreless innings to earn the save. Manner picked up the win, his first of the season.
"I thought this was a great team win against a very good Adrian team," said head coach Matt Palm. "Throughout the lineup, we had good at-bats all game. We had different guys step up at different times."
Heidelberg will be idle on Thursday before lacing up the cleats again on Friday. The Student Princes will face Northland College at 10 a.m. in Fort Myers.
