Box Score 2 OBERLIN, Ohio – The Heidelberg University baseball team started their Ohio Athletic Conference slate with a split against Baldwin Wallace University. Heidelberg won the first game, 10-8, before losing the second game, 7-5. Originally scheduled to be played in Berea, unplayable conditions at BW's Heritage Field forced the games to move to Oberlin College's Dill Field.
Heidelberg (14-3, 1-1 OAC) used a seven-run sixth inning to nab the lead from the Yellow Jackets. Trailing 7-2, Trevor Oldham, Alex Grove and Adam Hershberger each singled to load the bases. After a pitching change, Derek Hendrixson singled home Oldham. The next batter, Joe Staab, hit into a potential double play, but after forcing Hendrixson at second, the throw to first was wild. The error allowed two runs to score and moved Staab to second. Following a walk to Arneal Squibb, Derek Hug rocketed a double to left center to score a pair. On the throw home to try to tag Squibb, Hug moved to third. He would score on a passed ball, giving Heidelberg a 9-7 lead.
Baldwin Wallace (10-6, 1-1) scored a run in the eighth, but after Heidelberg added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, Hendrixson closed the door. The freshman sophomore pitched two scoreless innings and picked up his second save of the season.
Starter Chris Thomas picked up the win and improved to 4-0. The senior allowed seven runs, three earned, in five innings of work.
Reliever Ben Sniezek contributed a strong two innings, allowing one run on one hit.
In the nightcap, the Student Princes took an early 4-1 lead with a three-run third. Staab walked and moved to second when Squibb was hit by a pitch. Eric Monroe singled and moved to second as Staab scored. Hug followed with an RBI basehit, scoring Squibb. Monroe crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Oldham.
A bases loaded walk drawn by Grove pushed the Heidelberg lead to 5-1 in the top of the fifth.
BW began to battle back in the bottom of the inning, plating a pair of runs off of HU starter Steve Huber. Huber allowed three runs, one earned, in five innings of work.
In the seventh, a two-out single off of reliever Adam Manner, brought home two Yellow Jackets and tied the game at 5.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Yellow Jackets would again plate a pair off of Manner, taking a 7-5 advantage. Manner (2-2) allowed four runs in 2.1 innings. Travis Gray worked the final 0.2 inning.
Heidelberg would go quietly in the ninth, snapping their 14-game winning streak. The Berg was held to a season-low five hits in the loss.
The Student Princes return to action on Wednesday. Case Western Reserve University will visit Tiffin for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
