Box Score

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – After the first three games of their annual spring break trip to Florida, the Heidelberg University baseball team's pitchers carried a 10.50 ERA. Following Steve Huber's exceptional outing in the tenth and final game of the excursion, the team ERA fell to 5.13. The Student Princes won their eighth straight game with a 14-1 win over the College of Wooster at the Snowbird Baseball Classic on Monday.

Huber allowed one run and four hits in eight innings of work, earning his first victory of the year.

"Steve threw hard and had good control," said associate head coach Chad Fitzgerald. "He did a great job keeping Wooster off balance and we played solid defense behind him."

For the first time in 2014, the Heidelberg defense did not commit an error.

Heidelberg (8-2) scored a run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Adam Hershberger.

Wooster (0-2) gave up six runs in the fourth as starter Matt Felvey walked the first three in the inning. Derek Hug hit an infield single, scoring Steve Morse. Trevor Oldham reached on an error by the second baseman, which pushed home Alex Grove. Hershberger, behind in the count, ripped a three-run double to clear the bases. After a sacrifice bunt moved him to third, Hershberger scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Staab.

The Fighting Scots got on the board in the fifth. Huber walked the first batter and hit the next. A sacrifice bunt moved the pair up a base. Jarrod Mancine grounded out to third, which allowed Cal Thomay to score.

The Berg responded with three runs in the sixth. Derek Hendrixson and Staab walked to start the frame. Both moved up on a passed ball. When Arneal Squibb sent a deep fly ball to center that was mishandled by Wooster, Hendrixson scored. After another walk, Heidelberg scored a run on a double play. The final run of the inning came across the plate via a passed ball.

In the eighth, the Student Princes capped off the spring trip with four runs. Squibb led off with a double and moved to third on a Doug Miller groundout. Grove slapped a single passed a drawn-in infield to score Squibb. Pinch hitter Austin Fleming was hit by a pitch. Grove and Fleming scored on a triple to deep center by Hug, his fourth of the season. Hug scored on an RBI groundout by Oldham.

Jordan Watson worked a scoreless ninth for Heidelberg.

The Student Princes head north with a team batting average of .369, led by Hug's .538 average. Hug leads the team with 18 RBI, four triples and is tied with Joe Staab for runs scored, with 16.

Eight players have knocked in 10 or more runs and seven have scored more than 10. The Berg has drawn 62 walks and has been hit by 27 pitches.

The Student Princes are scheduled to face Manchester for a three-game series in Indiana starting Friday. Winter weather may force a change to the venue or the schedule. Any changes will be announced on the Heidelberg University Athletics website.
