Baseball stumbles in Battle of the Bergs

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Despite a strong offensive showing, Heidelberg couldn't keep pace in a slugfest against Wittenberg, falling 19-10 on Tuesday evening. The loss moves The Berg to 14-20, while Wittenberg improves to 27-17.

The Student Princes jumped out early, plating four runs in the top of the first. A leadoff homer from Theo Walsh got things started, and Andrew Pokley followed with a two-run blast over the wall, scoring Braedy Limke. Later in the inning, Logan Walpole drove in Garrett LaBeau with a single to left, capping a fast 4-0 start.

Heidelberg stayed hot in the second, tacking on three more runs. Pokley stayed productive, this time delivering a two-run double to bring home Walsh and Kyle Krummen. Limke would later score on a sacrifice fly from Thomas McGuire, giving Heidelberg a 7-4 lead after two.

In the fourth, Pokley crossed the plate again, this time on a balk, pushing the score to 8-6. One inning later, Walpole led off with a single and later scored on a fielder's choice from Sam Schneider, briefly giving Heidelberg a 9-8 edge.

The final run of the night came in the eighth inning, when Schneider came around to score on an RBI single by Labeau.

Despite the 12-hit night, Heidelberg couldn't hold off Wittenberg's offense, who pulled away with a big eighth inning. Pokley led the way at the plate with four RBIs, while multi-hit performances came from Walpole, Labeau, Limke, and Pokley.
