BEREA -- The Heidelberg University Baseball team received two strong starts from
Nicolas Lavelle and
Orion Kroah, but the host Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets delivered late in both halves of a midweek OAC doubleheader. BW took the opener, 4-1, then rallied for a 4-3 win in the night cap.
Heidelberg slid to 9-15, 1-5 in league play.
After a scoreless five innings in game one,
Sam Schneider led off in the top of the sixth with a double to right center. He quickly scampered to third after
Andrew Pokley grounded out to the shortstop. Schneider then saw his opportunity and reached home on a passed ball, giving Heidelberg their lone lead of the game.
The Berg surrendered a run and a lead in the bottom of the sixth, and it looked like we were heading to extra innings before Baldwin Wallace added three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Lavelle tossed six innings, allowing just five hits, one run with three strikeouts. He faced 23 batters in the game.
Heidelberg scored in the top of the first inning of game two. Schneider singled to left center and advanced on a passed ball. With two outs, he scored on a single to center by
Garrett LaBeau.
The Student Princes added another in the fourth. LaBeau led off with a single before motoring to third on an errant pickoff attempt. He raced home on a wild pitch.
BW tied the game in the sixth, but Heidelberg rebounded in the eighth. Schneider singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Andrew Pokley. LaBeau delivered once more, serving a single into left center that drove in Schneider.
Three hits and a costly error in the bottom of the ninth allowed the Yellow Jackets to walk off with the win.
Kroah battled through five shutout innings, allowing four hits but walking six.
The roadshow continues for the Student Princes at Wilmington on Saturday. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, weather permitting.
