WESTFIELD, Indiana -- Bolstered by a strong performance from starter
Dylan Matusak, the Heidelberg University Baseball team won its first game of the season. Matusak scattered four hits in six innings as the Student Princes defeated Hope College, 6-2.
Originally slated for a three-game weekend slate in Lexington, Ky., weather forced Heidelberg to pivot to a two-game set at Grand Park in Central Indiana. HU was 1-1.
Matusak (W, 1-0) fanned five and allowed one run.
Braedy Limke had a one-out single in the top of the first and sprinted to third on a base hit by
Andrew Pokley.
Cort Kramer followed with a double to left that drove the pair.
Kramer's single in the third plated Limke again, giving the Student Princes a 3-0 lead.
In the fourth, a triple to the gap in right center by
Garrett LaBeau pushed
Logan Walpole and
Anthony D'Amico across.
D'Amico dropped a two-out RBI single down the right field line in the sixth, running HU's lead up to 6-0.
Hope scored single runs in the sixth and seventh, but was unable to do further damage against Matusak and relievers
Orion Kroah and
Nicolas Lavelle.
Heidelberg returns to action on Saturday, taking on defending national champion Misericordia in Fort Pierce, Fla. The contest is the first of eight in the Sunshine State for the Student Princes.
