NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University Football team handled business on the road, earning a 29-14 win over host Muskingum University on Saturday. The 'Berg defense forced two turnovers, two turnover on downs, and picked up a safety in an impressive performance against a high-octane Musky offense.
Heidelberg improved to 4-3 overall, 3-2 in the OAC. Muskingum dipped to 3-4, 3-2.
The defense was led by
Trey Farris, who picked up 10 tackles (1.5 for loss), two QB hurries, a sack and a fumble recovery. HU had 11 total tackles for loss.
Down 7-0 after one, Heidelberg embarked on a 10-play, 95-yard drive to tie the game.
Ty Poorman found
Shae Sparks coming out of the backfield for a 13-yard touchdown pass.
Landon Stein's extra point knotted the game.
In the final minute of the first half,
Drew Miller caught a Poorman pass and raced into the end zone from 13 yards out, untouched. A low, bobbled snap kept the contest at 13-7.
On the opening drive of the third, Heidelberg rode the momentum of a strong return from Sparks and two facemask penalties to plunge into the end zone once again. Poorman was shoved into the end zone from a yard out. Stein's PAT gave HU a 20-7 advantage.
Austin Niederkohr blocked a 24-yard field goal on the ensuing Muskingum possession.
Ahead 20-14 in the fourth Heidelberg turned the ball over in the red zone -- but the defense responded. Quarterback Garrett Gurney was flagged for intentional grounding from inside his own end zone, resulting in a safety. HU led by eight, 22-14.
After the free kick, Heidelberg needed four plays to go 52 yards for the insurance touchdown.
Leo Martin caught a pass in the flat and eluded a defender before scampering 12 yards for the touchdown. Stein's PAT pushed the lead to 15.
Desperate for points, Muskingum converted on fourth down twice on their next possession -- a drive that stalled out in the red zone. With 1st-and-10 from the 'Berg 16, Gurney was sacked on consecutive plays.
Deymien Chavarry was in on both sacks.
From there, Miller secured the win with three straight four-yard runs. Miller finished with 178 all-purpose yards, including 123 on the ground -- his fourth 100+ yard game this season.
Poorman was 17-for-27 for 234 yards and three touchdowns.
Muskingum, averaging 40.3 points through the first six games, was held to a season-low 14 points.
Heidelberg returns to Hoernemann Stadium next week to host Otterbein in the annual River River Cup game. Kickoff with the Cardinals is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
