MARIETTA -- On the road one final time in the 2024 season, the Heidelberg University Softball team picked up a split at Marietta College. Heidelberg won the opener, 12-4, then lost the second game, 9-0.
Heidelberg moved to 13-25 overall, 6-10 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Marietta's record stands at 15-18, 7-9.
GAME ONE: BERG 12-14-1 MAR 4-11-1
Heidelberg took an early lead when
Murissa Drown doubled home
Gabbie Stallbaum in the first inning.
Jade Torres doubled, then
Logyn Chamberlin and
Hannah Hashman singled, loading the bases in the second.
Aubrey Conklin followed with a two-run double. With one out, Stallbaum singled home Hashman. After a pitching change, Drown and
Ellie Tressler drew walks that forced in another run.
Caitlynn Newlen drove in another run with a single through the right side. Torres capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly -- driving in the sixth run of the inning.
Stallbaum delivered her 11th homer of the season in the third inning, a prodigious two-run blast to right center.
In the fourth, Tressler led off with a solo home run to left center -- giving Heidleberg a 10-0 advantage.
The hosts scored twice in the fourth and twice in the fifth, avoiding the mercy rule. The Berg countered with two runs in the top of the seventh, with Drown driving in two runs on a single up the middle.
Jessica Voitko (W, 4-12) earned the victory with 4.2 innings of work. She allowed four runs on nine hits, striking out three.
Kailyn Kroll worked the final 2.1 innings without allowing a run.
GAME TWO: MAR 9-13-1 BERG 0-3-4 (5 innings)
Unable to muster any offense in the nightcap, Heidelberg held on to a scoreless tie into the fourth. The Pioneers scored five in the fourth and walked off with four in the fifth.

Heidelberg wraps up the 2024 campaign at home next Saturday against Ohio Northern. The Senior Day doubleheader is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
