Seniors shine in season finale

TIFFIN -- On a dreary Saturday that included a 22-minute rain delay, the Heidelberg University celebrated the careers of 10 seniors in a doubleheader split with visiting Ohio Northern University. Heidelberg took the opener, 5-2, but Ohio Northern won the nightcap, 12-8.

Prior to the game, Heidelberg honored Ryann Ramacciatti, Emma Dean, Kailyn Kroll, Logyn Chamberlin, Alyssa Bennett, Morgan Woycitzky, Caitlin Dems, Deanna Voris, Murissa Drown, and Jessica Voitko.

The Student Princes closed the season with a 14-26 record overall, 7-11 in the OAC. In the process, junior Gabbie Stallbaum inked her name in the Heidelberg program record book, launching her 12th home run of the year -- tied for the most in a single season in 'Berg history.

GAME ONE:  BERG 5-7-3   ONU 2-7-1

Aubrey Conklin worked a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first, then stole second. With one out, Stallbaum smoked a single up the middle, driving in Conklin.

In the top of the second, ONU scored once before and once after the rain delay -- taking a 2-1 lead with a pair of unearned runs.

In the fifth, Caitlynn Newlen had an infield single and advanced when Jade Torres was hit in the elbow guard with a pitch. After Chamberlin sacrificed the runners over, 'Berg Head Coach Mari Briggs called on Kroll to pinch hit. The move paid off when Kroll stroked a two-run single to center, giving HU a 3-2 lead.

Thirsty for an insurance run, the Student Princes loaded the bases with three straight singles to open the sixth. After a strikeout and a force out at home, ONU was on the verge of getting out of the jam. Conklin sent a grounder to second that was mishandled, a gaffe that allowed two runs to score.

Voitko (W, 5-12), the game one starter, threw one pitch in the seventh, then was taken out of the game -- allowing the Frann's Field crowd to salute the energetic southpaw with a well-earned round of applause. Dems (Sv., 1) entered and worked around a pair of singles, sealing the win. Voitko was stellar, limiting ONU to five hits in 6+ innings. She struck out two and walked none.

GAME TWO:   ONU 12-13-1   BERG 8-12-5

The Polar Bears built a 6-0 lead by the middle of the second, scoring five unearned runs. Heidelberg responded with a pair of runs in the second. Conklin had a two-out single that plated pinch runner Janiyah Moye and Torres.

ONU added two in the fourth and four in the fifth, building a 12-2 lead.

Facing the mercy rule, Heidelberg charged back in a big way. After Conklin reached on an error, Woycitzky slashed a single to left. Stallbaum worked the count full before unloading on a 3-2 pitch, sending a high-arching three-run homer to left center. The home run was her 12th of the season, matching the HU record, set in 2006 by Ashley Foust.

Still in the fifth, Drown ripped a single through the left side and motored to third on a double inside the left field line by Ellie Tressler. After a pitching change, Newlen singled home Drown and Torres walked. Chamberlin followed with an RBI single. With one out, Conklin sent a sacrifice fly to right, capping a six-run inning.

Down 12-8, Heidelberg threatened in the sixth, but was held scoreless.

Dems, Kroll, and Voitko split the nightcap. Dems and Kroll both received their curtain call moment, receiving a hearty round of applause from the crowd and hugs from teammates.
