UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The Heidelberg University baseball team dropped two games in a doubleheader this afternoon against John Carroll University, 10-8 in game one and 5-4 in game two. Despite dropping both games, Heidelberg tallied 22 hits on the afternoon.
Adam McVicker led Heidelberg at the plate with five hits and a team-high five RBIs.
Aidan Corrigan added four hits and one RBI of his own for the 'Berg.
GAME ONE: JCU 10-11-0 BERG 8-10-4
Dylan Matusak got the nod for Heidelberg, going five innings, giving up six runs on seven hits while fanning four. Payton Mosier,
Orion Kroah and
Vincent Marimpietri worked the final three innings in the loss.
The hosts took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Bryce Holt hit a three-run home run to right field.
Heidelberg responded in the fourth when
Braedy Limke and
Aidan Corrigan got things going with back-to-back singles to start the inning.
Camden Farley followed with a sac fly to right field, allowing HU to plate their first run.
With one runner on and one out,
Adam McVicker came to the dish and did what he does best and launched a two-run shot into the neighbor's yard beyond the right field fence, tying the game.
JCU took back a one-run lead in the home half of the fourth, but the Student Princes deficit didn't last long as a
Reece McNeely double in the fifth allowed
Andrew Pokley to score, making it 4-4.
The Blue Streaks seemingly responded to every 'Berg counter and put up two more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to take the 7-4 advantage.
HU tallied another run in the top of the seventh off of a
Kyle Mottice single, but the host put three more runs across the dish in the bottom half, stretching the HU deficit to six.
The Student Princes threatened in the ninth as they scored three runs, but the rally fell short, ending in a 10-8 defeat.
GAME TWO: JCU 5 BERG 4
Corrigan got things started in game two for the Berg, singling up the middle to give the visitors an early base runner. He later stole second and then advanced to third off of a Farley popup. McVicker stayed hot, hitting Corrigan in with a single to left center, giving the Student Princes the 1-0 lead.
Back-to-back one out singles from Farley and McVicker allowed Heidelberg to plate two more runs in the third, stretching the lead to three.
With runners on first and second with two outs, Corrigan notched his third hit of the game with a single to right field, allowing McNeely to score from second and giving HU an insurance run after four innings of action.
With the Blue Streaks down four runs heading into the fifth, they were able to tally three runs in the bottom of the innings, cutting their deficit to just one. The next inning, the hosts took the 5-4 lead after a double to left center, scoring the go ahead run for JCU.
Neither team would score in the final three innings, resulting in the 5-4 loss for Heidelberg.
