Women's soccer splits weekend road trip

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Heidelberg University women's soccer team got their first win of the season as they knocked off Thiel, 7-0 on Sunday. They split the weekend after falling to Westminster on Saturday, 2-0. Madi Lause, Mallory Zavatchen and Viviana Palmer all tallied two goals apiece in the win over the Tomcats.

For the weekend, the Student Princes tallied 22 shots on goal with seven of those resulting in goals. Sophomore goalie Brigid Enright got the start on Saturday where she scooped up eight saves and gave up two goals in the loss.

The Student Princes improve to 1-1-2 on the season while Thiel falls to 1-4-1.

HU was on the attack Sunday as they were able to find the back of the net seven times in the rout over the Tomcats. Following a failed steal from the home team, Lause found the ball and nailed it to the back left of the net to put Heidelberg up 1-0. Four minutes later she scored another goal to stretch the HU lead.

Just before the end of the first half, Viviana Palmer received the throw in and split the defenders and laced one into the back of the net for her second career goal. Heidelberg would take a 3-0 lead at the break.

Zavatchen joined in on the scoring parade notching her first career goal following what appeared to be some confusion by the Tomcats. The goalie failed to get a hold of the goal kick resulting in the easy HU goal.

Zavatchen followed up with her second goal of the game at the 79:40 mark with the assist coming from Makenzie Damsa to put HU up 5-0.

Palmer got her second goal of the day off a miscue from the Thiel defense as they tried to get the ball back to the goalie and Palmer snuck right through to steal a goal for Heidelberg.
Transfer Yaniah Powell scored her first goal as a Student Prince in the final minutes to help seal the 7-0 victory.

The Heidelberg defense was suffocating in the win with the home team only having one total shot on the day, helping goalie Meredith Bruce tally her first shutout of the season.

The women will be back in action on Wednesday as they host the College of Wooster in a non-conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Hoernemann Stadium.
