DELAWARE, Ohio – The Heidelberg University volleyball team dropped two on the final day of the Bishop Invitational. Hoping to shrug off yesterday's loss and pick back up on their winning streak, Spalding and Bethany had other ideas. The Student Princes finished the weekend 1-3, but still sit with an impressive 11-4 overall record – the best start since 2019.
On the day,
Grace Porter led the offense with a gaudy 22 kills, earning herself All-Tournament Team with her two day performance.
Anamya Truex tallied 16 kills while
Lexi Wachtman added 15 of her own. Setters
Bridgette Burrus and Gabbie Cumbo dished out 34 and 21 assists, respectively.
Defensively,
Nicole Thomas racked up 38 digs, followed by 19 from Dohanyos. Truex had a team-high ten blocks.
HEIDELBERG 1 SPALDING 3 (28-26, 23-25, 21-25, 23-25)
The first set was neck and neck until Heidelberg went on a 13-3 run, of which 11 points were at Spalding faults. They would eventually go on a spurt of their own to force extra play where the final two kills came from Porter for the win.
Heidelberg didn't get as lucky in the second set, as they waited just a tad too late to make a comeback. In the third and fourth sets, HU had the lead up until their 19th point, at which Spalding found revenge and finished atop the scoreboard.
HEIDELBERG 2 BETHANY 3 (25-19, 24-26, 25-16, 14-25, 9-15)
The Student Princes' best chance at a win for the day was during a whirlwind of a match. Early on,
Lexi Evak picked up a kill followed by a big solo block. They would follow that momentum through the end for the victory.
Bethany bounced back in the second, finding three straight kills to close it out.
HU made easy work of the third set, outscoring their opponents 9-1. The largest lead of the set was a dozen at one point. In a complete turnaround of events, Heidelberg lost the fourth set in similar fashion as the Bisons.
A couple service aces to start the fifth gave Bethany some confidence as they never gave Heidelberg a chance to tie it up.
The Student Princes will take a road trip up to Albion (7-4), Mich. for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m. They also travel to fellow MIAA foe, Adrian (4-6), on Friday Sept. 22 for a 6:30 p.m. matchup.
