ALBION, Michigan -- The Heidelberg University Volleyball team struggled to overcome a late collapse in the first set, falling in three sets to host Albion College on Tuesday. The Britons scored the final six points in the first set en route to a 26-24, 25-19, 25-23 win.
Heidelberg slipped to 11-5 overall, having dropped four of its last five. Albion improved to 8-4.
Anamya Truex had a team-high nine kills, hitting .300.
Grace Porter had eight kills.
Maddie Reed had 16 assists and
Bridgette Burrus added 12.
Defensively,
Nicole Thomas had 25 digs while
Grace Dohanyos tallied 11. At the net, Truex led the way with three blocks.
The hosts led 5-1 in the opening set, but Heidelberg was able to tie the set at 11. Later, HU scored four straight to build a five-point cushion -- a run highlighted by a block from
Kaitlyn Uffman and
Anamya Truex. A kill from
Grace Porter pushed the Student Princes to the brink of victory at 24-20. After a timeout, Albion used two aces, two kills and two attack errors to stun The Berg.
Albion took a 15-9 lead with a 5-0 run midway through the second set. Undaunted, the Student Princes rallied and tied the set at 19. But, just as they did in the first, the Britons rattled off the final six points of the set and took a 2-0 lead.
Playing catch-up for most of the third set, HU clawed back to even at 19-19. The seesaw set was tied at 20 and 23 before Albion closed out the sweep.
Albion was led by Olivia Alexander's 16 kills which came on 57 swings.
Heidelberg travels to Adrian College for a Friday night showdown with the Bulldogs. The non-conference match is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start.
