Perry's equalizer salvages WSOC tie

Box Score TIFFIN -- The start of the 2023 season has been anything but conventional for the Heidelberg University Women's Soccer team.  After settling for a 0-0 draw in the opener, HU held a 2-0 lead in a game that was questionably abandoned because of weather at Bethany.  On Wednesday, the game against Kenyon -- originally slated for 4 p.m. on grass, but moved to turf because of rain on Tuesday -- was delayed by lightning.  Undeterred by Mother Nature, the Student Princes fought to a 1-1 draw against the Owls.

The Student Princes conceded a goal early, falling behind 1-0 in the fifth minute.  Despite the deficit, Heidelberg regained its composure and the game was even throughout the rest of the half.

Shortly after halftime, a lightning delay -- stemming from the only blob of bad weather in Northwest Ohio -- halted play for nearly 50 minutes. Unlike the debacle Heidelberg faced at Bethany last week, patient game officials allowed play to resume.

Heidelberg found the equalizer in the 71st minute.  After the Kenyon goalkeeper made a beautiful diving play to thwart a 'Berg counterattack, HU lined up for a corner kick.  Senior Megan Hamilton sailed an out-swinging ball to the far side of the penalty area where Olivia Perry leapt and headed the ball into the corner of the net.  The shot, just above the head of the player marking the post and beyond the outstretched fingertips of the goalkeeper, was the first official goal of the season for Heidelberg.

Both teams had great chances in the final 20 minutes, but none were better than a look Kenyon's Hailey Moss had in the 88th.  Knifing between two defenders, Moss took a chipped pass and was in all alone with 'Berg goalkeeper Brigid Enright. Her shot was right at the feet of Enright, who played it well and preserved the 1-1 tie.

Enright had 11 saves in the tie.

The Student Princes, now 0-0-2 on the season, travel east for a pair of matches over the weekend.  HU faces Westminster on Saturday and Thiel on Sunday.
