WILMINGTON, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University baseball team salvaged a split on the road at Wilmington College on Friday -- dropping the opener, 11-5, then winning the nightcap, 11-7. Heidelberg moved to 11-13 overall, 3-3 in the OAC.
Andrew Cook was 6-for-10 with a home run and four RBIs.
Andrew Pokley and
Braedy Limke both added four hits.
GAME ONE: WILM 11-17-0 BERG 5-9-2
Heidelberg scored three in the top of the first -- plating one on a base hit by
Kyle Krummen and two on a single by Pokley. The Quakers tied it in the first and added four in the second.
Down 8-3 in the fifth, Heidelberg crept back in with a pair of runs. Limke walked and moved to second on a ground out. Cook followed with a two-out single through the right side that drove in a run. After a stolen base and a walk to
Cort Kramer, Krummen delivered another RBI base hit. The Student Princes left the bases loaded, however.
The Quakers added two in the sixth and one in the seventh.
GAME TWO: BERG 11-14-3 WILM 7-12-1
Cook ignited the Student Princes with a two-run homer in the first inning of the nightcap. The homer -- his fourth of the year -- was a lined shot to left.
With two outs and the bases empty in the second, Heidelberg surged ahead for four runs. Two strikeouts were followed by five consecutive singles. Krummen, Cook and
Aidan Corrigan all drove in runs with their base knocks.
Kyle Mottice closed the scoring in the inning by drawing a bases-loaded walk.
The Quakers clawed back and trailed 6-4 after six.
In dire need of momentum, Heidelberg was energized by a solo home run from Garrett Labeau in the seventh. Labeau's longball to right and jovial sprint around the bases gave HU a 7-4 lead.
The Berg padded its lead in the eighth. An error, a single and a hit batter loaded the bases with no outs. Pokley doubled home Krummen and Cook and prompted a pitching change.
Orion Kroah drove in Corrigan with a single to right. Later, Pokley scored on a wild pitch.
Down 11-4, Wilmington added one in the eighth and two in the ninth, but were unable to prevail.
Jackson Powers (4-2) went six innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits.
Zane Mirgon and
Corey Brafford worked the final three innings.
