TIFFIN --
Andrew Cook helped power the Heidelberg baseball team over the Anderson Ravens 7-4 on Wednesday with a walk-off three run home run in the ninth. Cook's walk-off homer is believed to be the first since 2013.
HU improved to 15-19 overall while the Ravens fell to 17-15.
Cook finished with three hits and five RBI on the day, and was the lone Heidelberg hitter with a multi-hit game. Four others for HU each tallied one hit in the win.
Tied at four with runners on first and second and two outs in the ninth, Cook came to the dish looking to end things. He did so by smoking an off-speed pitch over the left field wall for his fifth home run of the season.
Cook's heroics came after both schools had been held scoreless since the second inning.
The Student Princes struck first in the home half of the first as Cook singled driving in two runs to put HU out to an early 2-0 lead.
Andrew Pokley followed up with a double to left field plating Berg baserunner.
A
Cort Kramer single through the right side of the infield allowed Pokley to move up a base and advanced home following an Anderson fielding error. HU led 4-0 after one.
Anderson responded with four runs in the top of the second to tie the game 4-4.
Though it seemed like a high-scoring game was in the making, both teams went cold offensively for the next seven innings of play.
Payton Moser got the start for Heidelberg, allowing four runs in two innings. Senior
Zane Mirgon had a nice showing for HU with four shutout innings of work and fanned six batters, tying his season high.
Ty Kirk added two innings of scoreless relief striking out two.
Jackson Powers (5-3) came in to pitch in the top of the ninth and blanked the Ravens. He struck out the first batter, followed by a ground out to third, and ended the inning on a called third strike.
Braedy Limke led off the ninth getting hit by a pitch. A ground out to second from
Aidan Corrigan moved Limke over to second. Junior
Camden Farley was then intentionally walked putting runners on first and second.
An
Adam McVicker popup would put the pressure on Cook with two outs in the inning. The junior third baseman was not phased and absolutely crushed one over the left field fence for the walk-off win, 7-4.
The Student Princes will be back in action tomorrow as they travel to Oberlin College in a game originally scheduled for Tuesday. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
