Corrigan hits for cycle

TIFFIN, Ohio -- Aidan Corrigan became the first Heidelberg University baseball player to hit for the cycle in at least 20 years, but the Student Princes let late leads slip away in both halves of a sweep by Otterbein University.  The Cardinals took the opener, 11-9, then won the nightcap, 6-4.

Corrigan was 6-for-10 on the day with four RBIs and four extra base hits.  Andrew Pokley had a five-hit afternoon with three doubles.

The Student Princes dropped to 12-16 overall, 4-6 in the OAC.

GAME ONE: OTT 11-15-2   BERG 9-14-3

For a game that finished with 20 combined runs, the first three innings were docile. After grounding into 1-6-3 double plays to end the second and third, the Cardinals scored single runs in the fourth and fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Corrigan tripled to right center and scored on a sacrifice fly by Adam McVicker.

Down 3-1 in the sixth, Andrew Cook scored on a passed ball.  In the seventh, HU took a lead with back-to-back two-out RBI doubles from Andrew Pokley and Cook.

Heidelberg's 4-3 lead was short lived.  Otterbein plated four runs on three hits and two walks.

The Student Princes showed their pluck in the bottom of the frame.  HU loaded the bases with one out before Camden Farley launched a sacrifice fly to deep center.  Garrett LaBeau scored easily from third, and Braedy Limke appeared to sprint home from second. Limke was called out for leaving early, though the replay seems to show otherwise -- ending the inning.

Otterbein tacked on four insurance runs in the ninth, taking an 11-5 lead.

HU didn't pack it in, however. A Pokley single sandwiched between two hit batsmen loaded the bases with one out.  LaBeau followed with a two-run single.  After Cort Kramer blooped in a pinch-hit single, Limke singled to center to score another.  Corrigan followed another RBI single, cutting the deficit to two.  With the tying run in scoring position, Otterbein ended the game with a 5-3 double play.

Jackson Powers threw seven strong innings, allowing three runs on nine hits.

GAME TWO: OTT 6-7-0   BERG 4-10-1

Down 1-0 in the first, Corrigan's monster game began with a solo home run to right.

After singling in the third, Corrigan tripled home two runs in the fifth, tying the game at three.

Heidelberg took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth when McVicker obliterated the ball for a leadoff homer.

Thirsting for the cycle, Corrigan legged out a pitter-patter-let's-get-at-'er double to shallow right center in the seventh.  An exhaustive search could not uncover the last Heidelberg player to hit for the cycle.

Otterbein tied the game in the eighth and took the lead with a two-run homer in the ninth.  HU had the tying run at the pate in the ninth but was unable to break through.
