PUNTA GORDA, Florida – The Heidelberg University baseball team ended its five-game skid as they knocked off the Dean College Bulldogs, 13-1. A six-run third inning and a strong seven inning performance from hurler
Dylan Matusak was the key to victory for The Berg.
The Student Princes improve to 3-5 on the year while Dean falls to 1-4.
Matusak threw a gem -- going seven full innings, yielding two hits and fanning a career-high 11 in the win.
Heidelberg struck first in the second inning when
Andrew Pokley hit a double to right field that scored
Camden Farley. Pokley was able to score thanks to a throwing error by the Bulldogs second baseman making it 2-0.
HU poured it on in the top of the third. With runners on second and third with no outs,
Andrew Cook hit a bases clearing single to score two more for Heidelberg. Pokley kept things going with a triple to deep right field allowing two more runners to score.
The onslaught continued with
Kyle Krummen doubling to left scoring one. Heidelberg was able to score six runs in the inning to stretch the lead to 8-0.
Pokely led off the fifth with his second triple of the game, this time to deep center.
Thomas Sauer brought him home with a single through the left side.
Reece McNeeley helped add on to the HU lead as he singled a run in. Heidelberg ended the inning scoring three runs adding to its 11-0 lead.
The top of the ninth saw HU add two insurance runs following a
Cort Kramer pinch-hit double that helped seal the 13-1 victory.
Five Heidelberg players had a multi hit game. Pokley had three hits while also tallying three RBI. Sauer tallied three hits, as well.
The Student Princes will be back on the diamond tomorrow to take on Mitchell College. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
