TIFFIN -- On a blustery late March afternoon, the Heidelberg University baseball team picked up a non-conference victory over visiting Ohio Wesleyan University, 6-2. The Student Princes pounded out 12 hits on the day, including a 4-for-4 afternoon for
Reece McNeely.
The victory pushed HU's record to 10-8.
Heidelberg trailed 1-0 after the top of the first, but starter
Andrew Cook wriggled out of a bases-loaded jam, just allowing the one run. The Berg responded in the bottom of the first, operating with two outs.
Camden Farley walked, moved to second when
Adam McVicker was hit by a pitch, then scored on a bouncer up the middle by Cook.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the fourth.
Andrew Pokley turned on a pitch and lined his first homer of the season over the wall in right. The solo shot gave HU a 2-1 advantage.
Reece McNeely led off the fifth with a single to second and moved to second on a bunt single by
Braedy Limke. Using his speed, McNeely swiped third and scored on an errant throw. Later, Limke also stole third, then trotted home on a double to the track in right by Farley. The Tricolor led 4-1 after five.
The Battling Bishops got one back in the sixth, but Heidelberg answered with two. Pokley hustled into second with a leadoff double and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by
Thomas Sauer. Veteran statistician
Cort Kramer lined a single into right center over the drawn-in infield. After motoring into third on a single by McNeely, Kramer scampered home on a sacrifice fly by Limke.
Cook went the first three innings, allowing one run on two hits while fanning four.
Payton Moser worked five full innings, and though he allowed seven hits and hit a guy, he only allowed one run.
Corey Brafford worked a scoreless ninth.
The Student Princes are scheduled to return to conference play on Saturday with a twinbill at Mount Union. Any weather-related schedule alterations will be published on BergAthletics.com.
