TIFFIN – Following an onslaught of hits yesterday, the Heidelberg University baseball team stayed hot, tallying 16 hits and four home runs in the 16-5 win over Defiance. The Student Princes improve to 7-6 overall, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 3-9.
Shortstop
Reece McNeely's knack for the long ball was in full swing. The junior was 2 for 3, driving in a career-high five runs as both of his hits were home runs.
Andrew Cook added three hits, with one being a home run.
Camden Farley added four RBI for HU on the day.
Dylan Matusak (2-0) got the start for Heidelberg. He had an efficient day on the hill for the Tricolor, going 5 innings, giving up six hits and three runs. He struck out four in the win.
Andrew Pokley got things going for Heidelberg in the first with a lead off double to center field. With one out and a runner on, Farley singled Pokley home making it 1-0 after one.
The Yellow Jackets scored two in the second. An HU error and a double from Tyler Dehan put Defiance up 2-1, but the Berg would soon answer in the home half of the inning.
The bottom half of the second saw Cook go deep to left field for his third home run of the season. Cort Krammer would get on via single and later scored on a wild pitch to put HU up 3-2.
Cook stayed hot in the fourth, driving in a run off a double to deep center field. Sophomore
Kyle Krummen followed up with a double of his own allowing Cook to score. McNeely kept his hot streak going hitting a three run home run, his second in two days. The Student Princes led 8-2 after four.
The Yellow Jackets appeared to find momentum in the top of the sixth. Gunner Gregg led off with a homerun to left field, cutting the deficit to 8-3. With runners on first and second with no outs,
Vincent Marimpietri came in and struck out the first batter he faced. He forced the next hitter to ground into a double play ending the inning.
HU continued their hot hitting in the bottom half of the inning with two outs. McNeely hit his second home run to deep left field, tacking on another run. Following a Pokley walk and an
Aidan Corrigan single, Farley came to the dish and delivered a three run bomb to stretch the Heidelberg lead to 12-3. The Student Princes added three insurance runs in the bottom of the inning to help seal the 16-5 victory.
Heidelberg will be back on the diamond tomorrow as they travel to Adrian College to take on the Bulldogs. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
