Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Warnock scores career first against Capital

TIFFIN – On Wednesday, the Heidelberg University women's soccer team put up its program best against Capital University since 2016. Brooke Warnock's first career goal, a slew of 'Berg defenders and goalie Meredith Bruce kept the game to a manageable 2-1 final score.

After being outshout 5-11 in the first half, Heidelberg reunited for an aggressive second. The Student Princes dished out seven shots to the Comets' six. Regardless of the outcome, it was one of the most intense matches at Hidden Valley this season.

In goal, Bruce stopped nine shots, including a pair of close-range free kicks. She now tallies 422 career saves, which bumps her up to the fifth most in program history (besting 6th place 389 after last season).

A dominant Capital team maintained the ball on their half for most of the first. Lexi Snider picked up both Comet goals within 1:30 of each other, with the first coming in the 18th minute.

Refusing to back down to the 2-0 deficit, the Student Princes found five shots. At 39:54, Warnock chest-bumped the ball past the goalie thanks to an Alayna Hahn assist from the deep corner.

A momentous celebration, led by Head Coach Madalynn McLaughlin, kept the team fired up.

Later, Raigain Staup had another chance at a goal with a shot in the last minute of the half. However, Capital's Snider wasn't ready for halftime and sent a pass upfield where they shot just barely off target with one second remaining, sending it into the break 2-1.

Caitlyn Cross had the only two shots on goal of the second within the first five minutes. Yaniah Powell followed with two good opportunities that couldn't find the net. Later, the Comets' defense saved them twice, as they blocked both of Madi Lause's shots.

The Student Princes fell to 4-9-2, 2-6-0 OAC while Capital improved to 10-6-2, 5-2-1 OAC.

The Heidelberg women's soccer team will celebrate senior day before their match on Saturday. A 1 p.m. kickoff against Wilmington (8-6-2, 1-5-1 OAC) closes out the Student Princes season.
