Women's soccer on cloud nine

9/7/2022 10:22:00 PM

Box Score TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University women's soccer team played host to non-conference Defiance College. A dominating 9-0 performance for the Student Princes was the most goals scored in a game since the 1997 season.

Giving rest to some starters, young players got to see big experiential minutes. With five of HU's goals coming from the bench, Mackenzie Damsa took the lead, scoring twice.

Heidelberg (1-1-1) found themselves on the board when Olivia Perry struck gold in the eighth minute to put the home team up 1-0. The Student Princes would net three more goals in the next eight minutes to stretch the lead to 4-0.

Off of a cross from Bekah Thomas which bounced off the post, Audrey Kaufman knocked in it for her 24th career goal.

After Kylie Hoover stole the ball at midfield, Kaufman broke out fast and assisted Hoover for a straight shot past the diving Defiance goalkeeper.

Following a corner kick, Madi Lause cleaned up the loose ball near the edge of the penalty area by drilling it in the back of the net.

Damsa scored two goals within three minutes of each other to stretch the Heidelberg lead to 6-0 going into the half.

The home team would net three more goals in the second half. Sophomore Raigan Staup scored her first career goal off of a cross from the aptly-named freshman, Caitlyn Cross

Brynlee Vermillion fired a shot into the center of the net, scoring a goal in her first collegiate appearance.

The final goal of the night came from sophomore Viviana Palmer, seeing her first collegiate action. As she launched it from the deep left corner, it sailed over the goalie into the right side of the net.

Frustration started to set in for the Yellow Jackets, as Sarah O'Shea got aggressive and drew a yellow card in the 76th minute.

Freshman goalkeeper Brigid Enright took the goal for her first career start. While Defiance (1-2-0) only had one shot attempt, she did have an incredible save. Leaping all the way to the top of the goal post, Enright tipped the ball enough to deflect it into the crossbar to preserve the shutout.

The 9-0 victory matched a 9-0 win at home against Otterbein in 1997. This was the 12th 9+ goal performance for the highly-decorated program.

The Heidelberg women's soccer team will be on the road this Saturday as they take a trip to Adrian, Michigan, for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
