TIFFIN – After dodging a cluster of afternoon storms, the Heidelberg University women's soccer team thundered past visiting Hiram College, beating the Terriers 5-1 on a hot and muggy afternoon. The win -- the third of the season -- put Heidelberg back above .500.
Heidelberg improved to 3-2-2 while Hiram fell to 2-4-2.
In the first half, Heidelberg scored two goals just three minutes apart to take a 2-0 lead over the Terriers.
Halfway into the opening frame,
Madi Lause fired it up the left side of the field. From there,
Audrey Kaufman made a move and slid the ball into the far side of the net past the diving Terrier goalie.
Minutes later, freshman
Olivia Perry scored her second collegiate goal off of a corner kick from
Megan Hamilton – who now leads the OAC in assists (4).
In the 61st minute, Hiram goalie Skyler Huda had a great save when
Bekah Thomas shot a cross to Kaufman who bumped it into the hands of Huda from just a few feet away.
Later, Lause scored off of an assist from
Caitlyn Cross – her second assist of the season.
Heidelberg allowed the Terriers one goal in the 81st minute, as Ashely Dekam sailed it past
Brigid Enright in goal.
Two back-to-back goals from the Berg put them up 5-1 late in the second half. First, Lause found the net again, scoring her third of the season (13th career) off a Kaufman assist.
Not even a minute later, Kaufman then turned around to steal the ball at midfield and dribble it past the Hiram defenders all the way into the back of the net. This was the second goal of the season for the senior.
In goal for the Tricolor, Enright made her third appearance of the season. She had three saves on the day.
Heidelberg dominated offensively, outshooting Hiram 29-10 – 16 of which were on goal.
The Heidelberg University women's soccer team will return to Hidden Valley on Saturday afternoon for a match against Earlham at 2 p.m.
