CLEVELAND -- The Heidelberg University softball team had its six-game winning streak snapped in a non-conference doubleheader sweep by host Case Western Reserve University on Tuesday. The Spartans took game one 7-2, then held on for a 7-6 win in game two.
The Student Princes sit at 20-14, 9-7 in the OAC with two critical games remaining.
GAME ONE: CWRU 7-8-0 BERG 2-8-2
Kat Brady singled to center and advanced on a bunt single by
Gabbie Stallbaum. After
Meghan Bame worked a walk,
Emma Dean drilled a single through the left side that plated Brady. The Spartans managed to escape the inning without further damage.
After Case jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one, Stallbaum doubled home
Madison Mosier in the second. The Spartans responded with four more in the home half of the inning.
Jessica Voitko worked 4.2 innings of scoreless relief for starter
Caitlin Dems.
Heidelberg had eight hits -- Stallbaum and Dean each had three, and Brady had two. Mosier drew three walks.
GAME TWO: CWRU 7-12-2 BERG 6-12-0
In the top of the third, The Berg found themselves on the wrong end of a 6-0 game -- but as has been the case all season long, they fought back. HU loaded the bases with no outs, using walks to
Hanna Blasinsky and Stallbaum around a single by Brady. Dean continued her torrid streak with a two-run single up the middle. A throwing error on a ball hit by Voitko allowed another two runs to scamper home.
One inning later, Heidelberg inched closer. Instead of slapping the ball toward the left side of the infield, Brady yanked a pitch and pounded it off the glove of the drawn-in fielder at first. The hot shot ricocheted off the glove and into no-man's land down the right field line. The result was a stand-up triple for the speedster. Brady scored on an infield single by Stallbaum.
Ryann Ramacciatti led off the fifth by dropping a single into left field. She scored when
Kailyn Kroll sent a one-hopper to the fence in left center for an RBI double in her first varsity at-bat of the season. The run tied the game at six.
The Spartans (26-9) retook the lead in the bottom of the inning with a two-out single and double.
Looking for an equalizer, Heidelberg left the bases loaded in the sixth and stranded another in the seventh.
Starter Peyton Scheid went 3.1 innings before giving way to Kroll. Kroll fanned one and allowed two hits in 2.2 innings.
Brady had four hits in the game -- her second four-hit game of the season. Dean ran her string of three-hit games to three.
