PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- Delayed and shortened by a Florida storm, the Heidelberg University baseball team concluded the spring team with a 4-3 loss to Arcadia University. Saturday's game was shortened to seven innings to permit the Student Princes to get to the airport in time for their flight back to frigid Ohio.
Heidelberg went 5-3 on the trip and stand at 5-5 overall.
Robert Hunt had reached first on a bunt base hit in the third inning when the game was halted for nearly two hours. When play resumed,
Keaton Mark walloped a two-run homer -- breaking a scoreless tie.
After Arcadia tied the game in the bottom of the inning,
Thomas Sauer hit a solo homer in the fourth to give Heidelberg the lead once more.
Arcadia scored once in the third and once in the fifth.
Down 4-3 with time ticking away, Heidelberg threatened in the seventh. Mark and
Eric DeVore singled, then
Adam McVicker walked to load the bases with no outs. Arcadia improbably escaped the jam with a runner hit by a batted ball followed by a double play.
Corbin Caplan went 2.2 innings and struck out three.
Jake Hall (1-1) and
John Hassler each threw 1.2 innings of work.
DeVore went 4-for-4 on Saturday and hit .514 with three home runs and 14 RBI in the Sunshine State.
Heidelberg is slated to play a home-and-home against Adrian College next weekend. Saturday is in Adrian, Sunday is in Tiffin. Both games are slated for 2 p.m. starts.
