Oberlin, OH – Heidelberg University women's soccer moved to 3-1 overall after a come-from-behind, 2-1, overtime win at Oberlin College on Tuesday night.
Â
The Yeowomen held the offensive advantage tallying 20 total shots to Heidelberg's 11, but it was strikes from junior
Audrey Kaufman and senior
Bekah Thomas that made the difference for the Berg.
Â
Oberlin took a 1-0 lead in the 27
th minute when Madeline Lynam found the back of the Berg net. A failed clear by the Student Princes backline led to a turnover near the Heidelberg penalty area where Grace Haynes connected with Lynam for the go-ahead goal.
Â
Coach Madalynn Mclaughlin rallied the troops during halftime and the Student Princes immediately equalized out of the break. Thomas connected with Kaufman to draw the sides level, 1-1.
Â
A crucial close-range save by 'Berg netminder, junior
Meredith Bruce, at the hour mark kept the scoreline locked at 1-1. The Yeowomen kept the offensive pressure on Bruce and the rearguard with another dangerous attempt with ten minutes left in regulation.Â
Â
The Cincinnati native made another key stop for the Berg en route to an eight-save performance. A long-range effort from
Madi Lause tested Oberlin keeper Isabelle Smith in the 88
th minute, but Smith hauled in the attempt forcing extra time.
The Yeowomen were harassing the Berg net in the opening minutes of extra time, but Bruce was equal to the task.
Quality team play in the Oberlin penalty area, resulted in Kaufman and
Lexi Foley finding Thomas in space. Thomas rifled the game-winner into the right corner for her 1
st goal of the campaign, completing the comeback.
Kaufman led the offensive charge for Heidelberg with four shots, one goal—her fifth of the season—and an assist.
From Interim Head Coach McLaughlin:
"We have talked all season about stepping into the arena for each other and that's exactly what we did tonight. Oberlin is very well-coached team and has a lot of talented players. They tested us, but our ladies proved to be connected. I am extremely proud of our ladies. We will enjoy this win, but get back to work because we are just getting started."
Heidelberg University women's soccer returns to the pitch on Saturday, September 18 as they host the Geneva College Golden Tornados at 1 p.m. at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex.
