TIFFIN -- Senior
Keaton Mark drove in six runs on six hits as the Heidelberg University baseball team salvaged a doubleheader split with Baldwin Wallace University. BW won the opener, 7-4, and Heidelberg invoked the mercy rule with a 12-2 victory in the night cap.
Mark had a three-run homer, a triple and four singles in nine at bats, leading the Heidelberg offense.
Second baseman
Tyler Smith had four hits and a pair of runs scored.
Heidelberg (5-5, 2-4 OAC) got two good starts from
Ross Thompson and
Alec Zoeller.
GAME ONE: BW 7 BERG 4
After a scoreless first inning, Baldwin Wallace plated single runs in the second and the third.
In the bottom of the third, Heidelberg answered.
Reece McNeely walked and
Robert Hunt singled to start the inning. After BW starter Dawson Gabe struck out the next two batters,
Keaton Mark blistered a home run to right center that put HU ahead 3-2.
A triple and a sacrifice fly in the fifth allowed BW to even the score at 3.
In the sixth,
Aidan Corrigan walked and scampered to third on a base hit by
Tyler Smith. With
Reece McNeely at the play, a pitch in the dirt bounced to the backstop, allowing Corrigan to score the go-ahead run.
The Yellow Jackets wasted no time tying the game in the seventh. Back-to-back doubles to start the inning yielded a run, but reliever
Brady Knizner averted more damage by working out of the jam.
Thompson went 6+ innings of work, allowing 10 hits and striking out four.
A lead off triple and a wild pitch to start the top of the eighth put BW ahead, 5-4. They added two more runs in the inning and led 7-4.
Heidelberg brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but were unable to rally back.
GAME TWO: BERG 12 BW 2 (8 innings)
The Student Princes opened the scoring in the nightcap with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first.
Kyle Jenkins reached on an error and scored on a triple by
Keaton Mark. Mark scored on a base hit by
Marc Ochoa.
Momentum carried over into the bottom of the second.
Zach Doran doubled to the wall in left center, plating
Tyler Smith and
Robert Hunt. Doran scored on a single by Mark.
Ahead 5-1 in the fourth, the Student Princes added another run. Jenkins doubled inside the right field line, then crossed the plate on another RBI single by Mark.
Game two starter
Alec Zoeller went five full innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits. He struck out six.
Though the Yellow Jackets pushed a run across in the top of the seventh, Heidelberg removed all doubt with a four-run outburst in the bottom half of the frame. With two out and two on,
Johnny Medvec ripped a triple to the gap in right center, scoring Mark and
Jake Vanek. Smith blooped a double down the left field line that scored Mark easily.
Zane Mirgon followed with a single to left, which closed the scoring in the inning.
Up eight, Heidelberg secured the mercy-rule victory with two runs in the eighth inning. Three walks loaded the bases, then a fielder's choice by
Salvatore Rocco and a base hit by
Josiah Aska pushed HU across the 10-run threshold.
