TIFFIN, Ohio -- It's been a long wait, but the Heidelberg University women's soccer team is back in action for the 2020-21 season. The Student Princes began their season with a 1-1 draw against the Quakers of Wilmington College.
Both teams begin their season with a 0-0-1 record.
In the 38th minute,
Bekah Thomas put her head on a
Lexi Foley cross in front of the Quaker goal. Wilmington goalkeeper Lauren Galloway made a save on the shot but could not hold onto the ball which deflected back off the post. Coming in for a second shot was Heidelberg captain
Audrey Kaufman, finding the open side of the goal with Galloway out of position.
Wilmington evened the score in the 61st minute, Heidi Edens took a 15-yard shot from the left hash mark. The shot curved away from
Meredith Bruce's hands and into the back of the net.
With the score level at the end of 90 minutes, the game went into overtime periods.
The Quakers recorded three shots on goal in extra minutes, but neither side was able to convert a goal in the added time.
Wilmington out-shot the Student Princes 17-10, Kaufman led HU with four shots. Heidelberg attempted four corner kicks in the contest, with two coming late in the second overtime period.
Bruce recorded nine saves for the Student Princes in the draw.
Heidelberg will host Capital University on Thursday evening with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
