TIFFIN, Ohio -- The rain subsided, but a cold March wind persisted through a dreary Thursday evening in Hoernemann Stadium. The Heidelberg University women's soccer team was unable to overcome both its opponent and the elements, falling 3-0.
The loss dropped HU's record to 0-1-1 on the young season. Capital, playing for the first time this season, moved to 1-0.
A giveaway in their own end proved costly for HU midway through the first half. With the wind at her back, Gabbi Viggiano crossed a ball into the penalty area. She found the forehead of a wide-open Olivia Rotolo, who calmly redirected the ball past the outstretched arms of HU keeper
Meredith Bruce.
The Crusaders would add another goal before halftime on a finish by Madeline Woodruff.
Woodruff tallied her second of the game midway through the second. Bruce came off her line and got tangled with a 'Berg defender. Woodruff gathered the loose ball and chipped it in before Bruce could scurry back.
Bruce made 10 saves in the loss.
Audrey Kaufman had the only three shots of the game for Heidelberg.
The Student Princes hit the road on Sunday, traveling to Marietta for a 2 p.m. match with the Pioneers.
