ADA, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University women's basketball team bowed out of the 2021 OAC Tournament after falling to No. 7 seed Ohio Northern on Monday. The Polar Bears shot extremely well en route to a 73-34 victory. Heidelberg wraps up the topsy-turvy season with a 1-12 record.
In the loss, senior guard
Brooke Beamer surpassed the 1,000-point plateau with a jumper in the third quarter. In doing so, Beamer became the 14th player in the history of the program to reach the milestone.
Karlee Mills led HU with 10 points while
Bailey Walter had nine rebounds.
Leading by five after the first quarter, the Polar Bears used the three-ball to open up the game in the second quarter. ONU hit four 3-pointers in the period and held a 33-14 edge at halftime.
Of their 14 first half points, Heidelberg scored 12 of them in the paint. Overall, the Student Princes shot 6-28 (21.8%) in the half.
The Polar Bears continued their strong play in the third period, outscoring HU by 10 points. Beamer's 1000th point came with 7:41 left in the frame on a pull-up jumper from near the right elbow.
In the fourth, first-year Head Coach
Rachel Ferri was able to get playing time for many of her reserves, including seniors
Mattie Overmyer,
Sadie Chaney, and
Lauryn VanHoose. That trio, along with Beamer, Hannak Kilps and
Kirsten Kochel all checked out of the game midway through the fourth, drawing a long, appreciative ovation from the Heidelberg fans. Most of those in attendance were permitted to attend their first game of the season as the OAC presidents voted to ease fan restrictions (COVID-19 protocols) in the tournament.
Beamer, who finished with two points, is the first Student Princes to reach 1,000 points since Kathleen Phillips in the 2011-12 season.
