Tiffin, OH – Led by sophomore
Madi Lause's two-goal performance on Saturday afternoon, the Heidelberg University women's soccer team snapped a two-match skid with a 3-1 victory over the visiting Marietta College Pioneers.
Lause played a vital role in all three Heidelberg goals as she provided the assist for the opening score of the contest. In the 11
th minute the tri-color drew first blood as Lause connected with
Bekah Thomas for her third goal of the campaign.
Minutes later
Audrey Kaufman tried to double the Berg lead with a well-placed attempt, but Pioneer keeper Katie Delaney was equal to the task.
Marietta equalized at the 30:30 mark when Emmah Kronenbitter beat Berg netminder
Meredith Bruce. A collection of substations for both squads late in the first half didn't make an impact on the score line and the match remained deadlocked, 1-1, at the break.
The tri-color came out firing in the second stanza with Kaufman, Lause and Thomas earning chances on net in the early minutes of the frame. In the 63
rd minute, Kaufman connecting with Lause for the go-ahead goal, her eighth of the season.
Following a Marietta corner kick minutes later the Pioneers nearly drew the match level again, but Bruce turned away the would-be equalizer en route to three save performance. Bruce's season total currently stands at 75, and the Cincinnati native boasts a conference-best .872 save percentage through 11 appearances.
Trailing 2-1, Marietta made a slew of late substitutions, including replacing Delaney in goal with Drew Ultican. At the 81:42 mark, Lause slotted an attempt past Ultican for the Berg's insurance goal, carrying the tri-color to the first Ohio Athletic Conference win of the season.
Lause's double against the Pios elevates her goal total to nine tying Kaufman's team-best mark. The duo currently sits in the top five amongst OAC goals scorers.
From Interim Head Coach Maddie McLaughlin:
"Today, we played for something bigger than ourselves. We played for those who have been and still are affected by cancer. The ladies played connected and confident. I'm extremely proud of them, but back to work on Monday to prepare for another OAC clash!"
The Student Princes improve to 8-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the OAC. The Heidelberg women continue the gauntlet of conference play on Wednesday, October 13, when they host the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex.
The Yellow Jackets enter Wednesday's matchup 5-8-0 overall and 0-3-0 (8
th) in the OAC.
