Tiffin, OH — The Heidelberg University women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss in a midweek Ohio Athletic Conference matchup with the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex.
The setback moves the Heidelberg women to 8-4-0 overall and 1-3-0 in conference play while the Yellow Jackets improve to 6-8-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the OAC.
The tri-color fell behind in the opening minutes when BW's Natalie Stewart laced a shot over Berg netminder
Meredith Bruce.
Playing from behind five minutes in, the Heidelberg attack couldn't break through for an equalizer. The Student Princes tallied only one shot in the first half but rallied in the second frame, outshooting BW 10-8 in the closing 45 minutes.
Offensively, the Heidelberg effort was led by junior forward
Audrey Kaufman with five shots, two on frame, followed by sophomore
Madi Lause with three attempts.
Ainsley Tucker and
Bekah Thomas found the mark with one shot on goal each, but Yellow Jacket keeper, Maddie Hofmann managed to keep her clean sheet intact for the full 90 minutes.
Out of the halftime break, the Yellow Jackets doubled their advantage at the 56:12 mark. From outside the Berg penalty area, BW's Sydney Rice booted a low, well-placed attempt past Bruce to put the Jackets in front 2-0.
Bruce hauled in six saves in the loss, moving her season total to 81. Despite allowing two BW goals, the Cincinnati native is maintaining a 1.08 goal against average and boasts an impressive .862 save percentage on the year.
Behind by two goals, the Berg attack kept the pressure on the Baldwin Wallace rearguard, but couldn't find the right combination to overcome the deficit.
Wednesday's defeat marks the first home loss of the 2021 campaign for the Student Princes.
The Heidelberg women will look to rebound on Saturday, October 16, when they travel to Westerville, Ohio to take on the Otterbein University Cardinals.
Kick off for the OAC bout is slated for 2 p.m.
