ALLIANCE -- The Heidelberg University women's basketball team dropped a second consecutive road game on Saturday afternoon, this time at the hands of the University of Mount Union by a final score of 82-58.
The loss drops Heidelberg to 8-15 overall on the year and 4-12 in conference play. Mount Union boosts to 14-9 on the year and 8-8 in the OAC with the win.
Brooke Beamer re-found her form offensively with 16 points on 47% shooting.
Maddy Crawford was the lone other Student Prince to hit double figures as she contributed 11 points.
Bailey Walter led the team with seven rebounds. Beamer also had a team-high four steals, while Crawford had a game-high three blocks.
On the opening possession, Beamer swiped the ball from Hailey Peoples-O'Neil and fed the ball to Crawford who converted the game's first bucket. Mount responded with a basket of their own, before a layup from
Brittanie Ulmer with 7:51 left in the first quarter put HU back on top early.
From the early 4-2 lead, Heidelberg could not muster their way back into the game as Mount Union knocked down a 3-pointer on their next possession, taking the lead -- one they would not surrender for the remainder of the game.
Heidelberg tried to make a comeback out of the halftime intermission. Trailing by 15, Heidelberg went on a brief 8-1 run that looked to be a turning point. First, Beamer hit a jumper, and then
Maddy Crawford converted a layup and free throw, before knocking down a jumper on the next possession.
Unfortunately for The Berg, the run was halted by a made 3-pointer from Sarah Turley with 5:22 left in the third quarter. The bucket re-energized the Purple Raiders as they held off HU's comeback efforts for the remainder of the game.
Mount Union was paced in scoring by Madison Hensley's 18 points and Elena Rauhe 17 points. Sarah Hessel was the game's leading rebounder with nine boards. Peoples-O'Neil led the way with five steals and four assists.
The Student Princes will head back to Tiffin for their final home game of the season on Wednesday, February 19th with a 7 p.m. tipoff vs. Ohio Northern. Prior to the game, HU will honor seniors
Leah Bouillon,
Maddy Crawford,
Kirsten Kochel and
Brittanie Ulmer for their contributions to the program.
