TIFFIN -- An unproductive second quarter spelled disaster for the Heidelberg University women's basketball team on Wednesday night as they dropped a home contest to Capital University by a final score of 77-60.
In the fateful second quarter, The Berg was outscored 23-3, which proved to be the difference at the end of the game.
Brooke Beamer led the Student Princes (6-10, 2-7 OAC) in scoring with 23 points on an efficient 10-for-16 shooting the ball. Beamer added four rebounds, two steals, and two assists on the night.
Alli Adelsperger was next in scoring for Heidelberg with 15 points. Adelsperger also added an assist, a block and a steal.
Maddy Crawford was the third Student Prince to hit double figures in scoring with 10. Filling her stat-line, Crawford added eight boards, four blocks and a steal.
Leah Bouillon contributed four steals as well for HU.
Heidelberg led for much of the first quarter but a late layup from Brooke Ommert had briefly put the Crusaders (9-7, 4-5) back on top with a 15-14 lead. With the shot clock off,
Brooke Beamer received a pass from
Brittanie Ulmer and knocked down a jumper from just outside the elbow at the buzzer, re-establishing a quarter break lead of 16-15 for the Student Princes.
The second quarter did not bode well for the Student Princes as Capital built a 38-19 lead at the break.
Maddy Crawford accounted for the lone Heidelberg scoring in the quarter.
After the halftime debrief, the Student Princes began the second half playing a high-press defense. In the first five minutes of play, the defensive efforts paid dividends as HU worked their way to a quick 14 points. However, Capital managed to break the pressure and cash in on outside jumpers for 15 points of their own.
The end-to-end early scoring of the quarter simmered out, with the visitors finished the frame on a modest 8-7 run, improving their lead to 22 points with 10 minutes left to play.
The Crusaders continued to break the high press in the fourth, long enough to keep the Student Princes' advances at bay. Heidelberg outscored Capital 20-15 in the fourth, but fell 77-60 at the end of the game.
Capital was paced in scoring by Cassidy Bosch who had 15. Emma Burns and Elli Wachtman each contributed 10. Bosch also added four rebounds and three steals.
In all, Capital held advantages in numerous categories included shooting percentage, rebounds, assists, steals, and second chance points.
Heidelberg will travel to Otterbein on Saturday as part of a men's / women's doubleheader. The women will tip around 5 p.m following the men's game at 3 p.m. Otterbein will be honoring long-time head coach Connie (Sanford) Richardson at halftime. Richardson, an '86 Heidelberg graduate, stepped away from coaching the Cardinals after last season.
