TIFFIN, Ohio -- Under the lights of Hoernemann Stadium, the Heidelberg University women's soccer team was victorious in their home opener, 2-1, over Oberlin College on Wednesday.
With the win, Heidelberg moved to 2-0. Oberlin dropped to 1-2.
"It was another great team win for us," said Head Coach
Nick Spell. "Oberlin is a very good opponent, so coming out on top in a game like this gives us momentum as we move forward."
Senior
Erica Campbell opened the scoring in the 19th minute. Narrowly onsides, Campbell split the Yeowomen defense and put a shot on Isabelle Smith. Smith, diving to her left, made the save on the initial shot, but Campbell hammered home the rebound. It was her second goal of the season, 30th of her career.
Oberlin found the equalizer ten minutes later. Mikaela De Lemos poked the ball into the far side netting after corralling it inside the six.
Knotted at the half, HU answered in the 59th minute. Again, it was Campbell knfiing through the Yeowomen and sending a shot on goal. She was pulled down as Smith made the save. This time, however, it was freshman
Audrey Kaufman who pounced on the rebound. It was Kaufman's second goal in as many games.
Heidelberg's back row, anchored by
Kate Mundy and
McKenzie Perry, gave little breathing room to the Yeowomen attack. Goalkeeper
Meredith Bruce was sharp, picking up two saves.
The Student Princes outshot Oberlin 16-6.
It was Heidelberg's first win over Oberlin since 2010, and first win in Tiffin against the Yeowomen since 1991.
The Berg returns to action for a pair of games over the weekend -- at Alma on Friday and at Olivet on Saturday.
