Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Newman's nine saves not enough at No. 7 Case

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Nine saves in goal for Ryan Newman was not enough under the lights for the Heidelberg University men's soccer team on Friday evening as they fell 1-0 to Case Western Reserve.

Newman was making his debut in goal for the Student Princes (0-1) and stonewalled, the No. 7 ranked Spartans (1-0) nine times, including five in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Case Western dictated play in the first 45 minutes, and found the lone breakthrough in the 17th minute on a goal from Seldon Magruder. Heidelberg was kept quiet on the offensive end of the field until the 43rd minute when freshman Ethan White registered the team's first shot of the game, forcing the Spartans' goalkeeper into a save.

The Berg started the second half in an end-to-end battle with Case Western as Bryce Zeleznik exchanged shots on goal with Case in the 49th and 50th minutes. Both of Zeleznik's shots required saves from Charlie Fink in goal.

In the game's final seconds, a shot by freshman Jackson Janetski from the edge of the penalty area was blocked by a Spartan defender.

On the stat sheet, Heidelberg experienced hardships against Case -- a 2018 NCAA Elite 8 qualifier. The Spartans out-shot the Student Princes 27-5 and held a 16-3 edge on corner kicks.

Fink was saddled with the three saves, while Newman tallied his nine. The mark for Newman was the most by a Heidelberg keeper since Jake Kress registered nine stops away to Baldwin Wallace on October 10, 2018.

Heidelberg will hope to pick up their first win of the young season as they travel to the College of Wooster on Wednesday September 4. Kickoff against the Fighting Scots is slated for 5 p.m.
