Berg picks up win in home opener

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University women's basketball team took full advantage of a rough night offensively by the visiting Lions of Mount St. Joseph, winning their home opener, 59-47.  The Student Princes have won two in a row, improving to 2-1 on the young season.

Maddy Crawford had 11 points and 13 rebounds, notching her second straight double-double and 26th of her career.  Brooke Beamer had a season-high 20 points and tied a career high with nine rebounds.

Brittanie Ulmer also reached double figures, finishing with 12 points.

Clinging onto a 40-39 lead with 1:11 left in the third quarter, the Tricolor caught quick fire to end the quarter and played strong defense limiting the visitors to just eight points to finish out the game across the final 11:11 of the game.

Ending the third, Brooke Beamer hit a tough jumper off a feed from Alli Adelsperger. With the ball back after a bad pass from Kamryn McCool, Beamer turned provider to Adelsperger where the latter knocked down a three-pointer from the corner. The quick five-point swing set the tone for what would be an electric fourth quarter.

In the fourth, a near carbon-copy of the second quarter ensued as the Berg forced MSJ (0-2) into poor shot attempts all period long. They finally connected on two baskets late on, but still only managed to shoot 2-for-13 in the fourth. Compared to MSJ's 15% shooting, The Berg converted on 33% of their attempts in the fourth to pull away for a 12-point victory.

Of the Student Princes' 14 fourth quarter points, Beamer accounted for five and Maddy Crawford tacked on three with 1:29 remaining. With Crawford at the line, she hit the front end of a pair of free throws before missing the second. Beamer picked up the offensive rebound and after a quick movement, Amy Hafer threaded the ball back to Crawford where she scooped in a layup. The bucket pushed her into double-figures for her second double-double of the season.

A poor second quarter of shooting for the Lions was the early difference-maker that led to a 26-21 halftime lead for the Student Princes. In the frame, MSJ shot 0-for-14 from the floor, scoring all five of their points from the charity stripe. Heidelberg needed the strong defensive effort as they managed just 10 points of their own on 20% shooting in the frame.

For Mt. St. Joseph -- who connected on just 14 field goals on the night -- Maddie Haberthy led the way with 20 points. Much of her scoring came courtesy of eight free throws. McCool tallied a team-high seven boards, while Haberthy added two blocks and two steals as well.

As a team, Heidelberg dominated the boards out-rebounding MSJ 47-31. In addition to Crawford and Beamer's efforts, Leah Bouillon, Alli Adelsperger, and Bailey Walter all tallied three rebounds.

Heidelberg's next contest will serve as an exhibition as they travel to NCAA Division I opponent Purdue-Fort Wayne on Sunday for a 12:30 p.m. tipoff. The Mastodons' current assistant coach Marcie Alberts served Heidelberg's head coach for five seasons prior to the hiring of Morgan Harrigan. Harrigan played under Alberts as a student and served as a graduate assistant for Alberts' final two seasons.
