TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University women's soccer team lost a disappointing match to Hiram College on Tuesday evening, 3-0. Moved up a day to accommodate Heidelberg's Patricia Adams Lecture Series dinner featuring former First Lady Laura Bush and her daughter Barbara Bush on Wednesday, the game never seemed to flow Heidelberg's way.
Heidelberg dropped to 4-4-1 while the Terriers improved to 2-9.
A sluggish first half did not go in favor of the Student Princes as they found themselves behind in the 40th minute. Hannah Ward found the back of the net on a follow-up after her initial shot hit off the crossbar breaking the deadline.
Earlier in the half,
Meredith Bruce did well to keep the game scoreless as she tipped over a Jessica Smith shot attempt bound for the top corner.
Heidelberg's best scoring chance in the first came on the foot of
Audrey Kaufman who tested Ally Green down low to her right forcing a quality save.
Green continued to keep the Terriers in front with spectacular saves early in the second half. Kaufman once again provided the Student Princes' best chance connecting with the right post in the 68th minute.
With Heidelberg pressing forward, desperate to find an equalizer, the visitors found an insurance goal in the 82nd minute. It was Smith again, for her second of the contest. She beat Bruce high.
Hiram removed all doubt with another goal in the 85th. Val Lauderback half-volleyed a rocket into the upper right corner from 25 yards out to give the Terriers a 3-0 lead.
Heidelberg narrowly outshot Hiram 23-22, including 13-12 on frame. Bruce made nine saves on the evening for the Tricolor, while Green stopped all 13 shots she faced for the Terriers.
The Berg will be back in action on Saturday as they host Wilmington College for their OAC opener. Kickoff at Hidden Valley Soccer Complex is slated for 1 p.m.
