Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Heidelberg falls in overtime

TIFFIN --  The Heidelberg University women's soccer team controlled much of the game's first 98 minutes, but could not find a goal.  Instead, it was a golden goal by the visiting Wilmington Quakers that broke a scoreless tie -- sending the guests home with a 1-0 win in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both schools.

Heidelberg dropped to 4-5-1, 0-1, despite holding a 22-12 edge in shots.  Wilmington improved to 6-3-1, 1-0.

Heidelberg had a great opportunity to get on the board first in the 17th minute.  Erica Campbell ran onto a long pass that split the Quaker defense.  Alone on a breakaway, Campbell's shot was knocked down by Lauren Galloway.

In the 23rd minute, it was again Campbell with an excellent look.  From the right side, she pelted the right post.  The Quakers cleaned up the rebound, keeping the game scoreless.

Maintaining pressure throughout much of the first half, Heidelberg had more chances.  Off a corner kick in the 28th, McKenzie Perry's header was saved off the line by a Wilmington defender.  In the 39th, it was Victoria Perez's chance from close range off a cross from the left corner.  This time, Galloway was there to make the save.

Heidelberg outshot the visitors 12-3 in the first half.

In the second half, a restart yielded an opportunity for Lexi Foley.  Her header looked destined to break the tie, but Galloway dove to her right to make the save in the 74th.

One of Wilmington's best chances came in the 82nd minute.  Taylor Huffman hit a low shot that HU goalkeeper Meredith Bruce dove and pushed away.  With the ball loose in the box, the Tricolor was able to clear the ball before the Quakers could get a foot on it.

The contest would be decided in overtime.

Moments after a WC header ricocheted off the crossbar, the Quakers found some luck.  After a clearance attempt was deflected, Heidi Evans found herself alone with space.  With her right foot, she sailed a shot toward goal from roughly 25 yards out.  Bruce tried to stop it with a leaping punch, but was unable to keep the ball out of the net in the 98th minute.

Bruce made eight saves while Galloway stopped nine.

Prior to the contest, Heidelberg presented Tressa Huber with flowers and an autographed pink shirt as part of the squad's annual breast cancer awareness game.

Looking ahead, Heidelberg hosts Capital on Wednesday.  The game is slated for a 4 p.m. start at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex.
