Brickner's barrage not enough for WBB

Box Score

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Having trailed by as many as 20 points, the Heidelberg University women's basketball team had finally rallied back to a 55-all tie at Mount Union, thanks to an Aianna Wilson 3-pointer to start the fourth. The next 65 seconds, however, halted all the HU momentum.

The Purple Raiders scored nine points in that minute-plus -- a three-point play followed by back-to-back 3-pointers off of turnovers -- and motored on to a 83-68 win over the Student Princes.

Kate Brickner had a team-high 14 points off the bench -- including a stunning 4-of-4 from beyond the arc in the second quarter. With 11 points, Marisa Liburdi was the other Student Prince in double-figures.

Heidelberg slipped to 3-7 overall, 1-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Mount Union moved to 5-4, 2-2.

Mount outscored Heidelberg 28-10 in the opening period behind dominant play in the paint. Erin White and Jaime Sanborn combined for 17 points in the first 10 minutes.

Brickner's triple-barrage came on four consecutive Heidelberg possessions. She took HU from a 36-20 hole to a 38-32 deficit at halftime.

In the third quarter, MTU held a 10-point lead with 2:39 remaining. A 3-pointer from Cassidy Frank ignited a 9-2 run to close the quarter for Heidelberg.

Wilson's triple came 14 seconds into the fourth quarter, tying the game at 55. After both teams traded misses, Mount Union embarked on their momentum-swinging 10-0 run -- chasing the 65-second spurt with a free throw.

HU's Brittanie Ulmer temporarily stopped the bleeding with a 3-pointer, but MTU cruised to victory.

The Purple Raiders dominated the glass -- out-rebounding Heidelberg 42-29. White finished with 23 points and eight boards.

"We talked about rebounding being the key stat of the game today ... and rebounding is why we lost," said head coach Morgan Harrigan. "We win the games we control the glass ... and we lose the ones we don't."

Heidelberg looks to regroup for Thursday's non-conference game at home against Wittenberg (4-7). The final game on the 2016 calendar is slated for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
