Women stumble for first time in 2015

Box Score

BEREA, Ohio – The Heidelberg University women's basketball team's three-game winning streak is over. Just barely. The Student Princes had four shots to tie the game or take the lead in the final 10 seconds, but could not find the bottom of the net in a 57-55 loss at Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday.

Five Heidelberg players finished with exactly 10 points, highlighted by Carli Patrick's 10th double-double of the season. The sophomore finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Shelby Dearth, Allie Hawkins, Paige Ricketts and Marisa Liburdi rounded out the quartet of Student Princes with 10 points.

Heidelberg (6-8, 4-3 OAC) led for a majority of the first half until hitting a scoreless skid which lasted the final 4:15 of the period. Down five, BW chipped away and took the lead on a pair of free throws by She'Kiera Brooks with 2:29 remaining. The Berg committed six turnovers during the drought, finishing with 24 for the game. The Yellow Jackets led 25-23 at intermission.

An 8-0 run by Heidelberg – a Patrick layup sandwiched between a pair of 3-pointers by Dearth – prompted a quick timeout from BW to start the second half. The HU run was pushed out to 11-0 after Hawkins connected on a three-point play, giving the Tricolor a nine point lead at 34-25.

Again, though, BW would attack the Heidelberg advantage, regaining the lead at 42-41. During the 17-7 run, Heidelberg turned the ball over six times.

Both teams stayed close throughout the remainder, with neither side able to grab more than a four-point cushion.

Down 57-53 with less than a minute, Hawkins was fouled on a drive to the basket and sank both free throws. On the ensuing possession, BW drained 28 seconds off the clock, but Ricketts corralled an errant shot by Clara Lemmon.

Out of a timeout, Ricketts drove, but her shot was blocked out of bounds. The inbound pass came to Patrick, who rimmed out a jumper from the side of the paint. The loose ball was picked up by Theresa Jackson, but her game-tying attempt was also blocked.

After a quick foul with less than two seconds, BW's Audrey Smolik missed the front end of a one-and-one. The ball was grabbed by Patrick who passed ahead to Jackson. With time expiring, Jackson's desperation heave from the backcourt circled the rim, but did not fall through.

The loss was Heidelberg's 25th straight to BW. The Student Princes haven't beaten the Yellow Jackets since 2004.

Heidelberg returns home on Saturday for a 3 p.m. battle with Capital University. The contest marks the 1,000th game in program history.
