Box Score BEXLEY – The Heidelberg University women's soccer team was able to strike first against Capital on Wednesday, but the Crusaders imposed their will after that moment, running away and dropping the Berg by a final score of 5-1.
The first period opened up about as well as it could have for the Berg when Kristen Keenan took a shot from the 18 in the 7th minute, finding the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season, giving Heidelberg a 1-0 advantage. Shortly after, Capital (12-5-1, 5-2-1 OAC) started taking control of the half, aggressively attacking. That play would pay off quickly, as the Crusaders scored in the 11th minute when Becca Cartmill found the equalizer. In the first 15 minutes of action, Capital was called for being offside seven times and took five shots, compared to just one shot for the Berg.
The Crusaders continued to push forward, and had a dangerous attempt on goal when a corner kick was headed on goal in the 26th minute, but Heidelberg goalkeeper Kenzie Lundqvist made a diving save to keep the score knotted at one. In the 34th minute, Capital freshman Mary Bushee made a solid strike from about 20 yards out, getting it past the keeper to give the Crusaders the 2-1 lead.
Capital extended their lead to two in the 44th minute when they stole the ball on Heidelberg's side of the field, capitalizing on a breakaway to go ahead 3-1, a score that would hold going into halftime.
The second half opened up much like the first, with Heidelberg fighting for an early opportunity. This time, Darby Moloney took a shot, but it was saved by the Capital keeper, denying the Berg.
From then on, the Crusader took control, scoring twice more put up a commanding lead. The Berg would find a couple more chances, as Lindsey Marcum hit a shot off the crossbar in the 84th minute and Moloney had another shot saved in the 90th minute, but it was not enough to break through as Capital went on to win by the final score of 5-1.
For the match Capital out-shot Heidelberg 20-6, while also showing their aggressive attack, getting called for being offside 13 times.
Heidelberg fell to 3-13-2 with the loss, including a 0-7-1 mark in OAC play. They will wrap up their season on Saturday when they travel to Wilmington. That match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
