TIFFIN -- On Senior Day,
Tre Watkins reached the 1,000-point milestone with a 23-point performance in a 92-82 loss to No. 18 Mount Union. The loss hurt Heidelberg's chances at a first-round bye in the OAC Tournament, set to begin on Feb. 20.
Fittingly, Watkins's milestone moment came on a 3-pointer late in the game -- the 196th trey of Tre's career. Watkins scored 359 at West Virginia State and has 643 over the past three seasons at Heidelberg.
Isaiah Young had 21 points, inching closer to 1,000 points, as well. The Akron native sits at 991.
Watkins and Young were both honored during a pregame ceremony, acknowledging their fantastic careers.
With his team down 22-16, Young scored eight straight for HU -- part of an 8-3 run. Minutes later,
Carter Pleiman hit a 3-pointer from the top of the arc that put the Student Princes ahead, 33-30.
The Purple Raiders closed the half on a 4-0 run and tied the game at 37 just before the halftime buzzer.
Mount Union was red-hot early in the second half, changing the complexion of the game with a 14-3 spurt. The visitors staved off each 'Berg surge -- keeping a comfortable lead throughout the remainder of the contest.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
Eric Panning finished with 11 points and 14 rebounds, notching his 18th double-double of the season … Heidelberg held a 40-34 edge on the glass, including an 18-5 margin in offensive rebounds … Despite the 18 offensive boards, Heidelberg only had 11 second-chance points.
TOURNAMENT PICTURE:
Heidelberg has clinched a spot in the six-team OAC Tournament, but their seed is yet to be determined. Undefeated in the OAC, John Carroll has clinched the top seed. Mount Union is alone in second place with 11 wins. Surging Otterbein holds onto sole possession of third with 10 wins. Heidelberg and Capital are 9-7, but HU holds the head-to-head tiebreaker. With eight wins, Marietta is two games up on Ohio Northern for the final spot. With two games remaining, ONU's only hope is to win both, have Marietta lose both, and get a favorable result in additional tiebreaking scenarios.
