BEREA – With a 28-point performance, Heidelberg University Men's Basketball guard
Isaiah Young surpassed the 1,000-point mark, helping lift the Student Princes to an 81-73 win over Baldwin Wallace in the penultimate game of the regular season. With the victory, Heidelberg continued to jockey for seeding in the upcoming Ohio Athletic Conference tournament.
The Student Princes improved to 14-10 overall, 10-7 in the OAC. With one game remaining, the six teams in the single-elimination tournament have been finalized -- but only John Carroll (16-1) has locked up their seed. Otterbein and Mount Union (both 11-6) square off on Saturday, with the winner taking the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye. The remaining seeds remain up in the air, depending largely on tie-breaking scenarios. The tournament runs Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday, with the winner receiving the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
In addition to Young's game-high 28 point night,
Jashun Cobb added 17 points off the bench.
Tre Watkins and
Eric Panning added 10 apiece.
Things stayed even through the front portion of the first half until the ten-minute mark. Baldwin Wallace would hold a short lead until Watkins made his first of two triples at 2:39. Just before the buzzer, he took a handoff from Cobb for a bank shot heave that went in as time expired. Heidelberg led by six at the break, 33-27.
The Tricolor opened the second half with an 11-4 run that pushed their lead to 13. The visitors maintained a comfortable lead for the next 10 minutes before BW began to creep back. A three-point play and a 3-pointer in quick succession brought the Yellow Jackets back to within five with five minutes left to play.
Heidelberg countered with four free throws from Cobb, which helped quell the BW momentum. HU's lead grew back to 10 after a Cobb free throw with 2:52. From there, BW inched back to within five with 82 seconds left -- but HU iced the game, going 6-for-6 at the line.
