WHEATON, Ill. — After scoring 208 victorious points in their first two games of the season, the Heidelberg University Men's Basketball team fell to Alma in a heartbreak buzzer-beater on Friday, 86-84. In the loss,
Eric Panning tallied his third season double-double and
Isaiah Young's 10/10 free throws marked a program best.
The Student Princes fell to 2-1 while the Scots advanced to 3-1.
Although HU fell behind by 11 points in the first half, the Student Princes led by as many as eight in the second. Tied up at 84-84 with 20 seconds to go, Alma had control of the ball.
Down by three with 59 seconds left in the game,
Eric Panning's defense helped contribute to an Alma turnover for another Heidelberg possession. On the other end,
Isaiah Young fought through the Scots defense, where he made a layup and picked up a foul. Sinking the free throw, he tied it up as Alma took a full timeout at 15 seconds to go.
With five seconds on the clock, the Scots threw up a floater that went over the heads of Heidelberg defenders and in the net. An unlucky half-court heave from the Tricolor bounced off the rim to end the game.
Alma took control of the game early, as they took the lead within the first five minutes of the half and hit the locker room with a 44-42 advantage.
Heidelberg came out strong, gaining an eight-point margin at their peak. Alma tied it back up with under eight minutes and never let HU back in front.
The Student Princes suffered from an uncharacteristically low shooting percentage but were fortunately backed by 21-26 from the line.
Young's 10-10 free throws tied a Heidelberg record for 100% from the line. In 1962-63, Henry Fowler was perfect against Akron. Most recently, Kiere Bennie notched 9/9 in the 2017-18 season.
Eric Panning picked up his eighth career double-double with 24 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.
Young led with 26 points.
Tre Watkins was the only other player in double digits, tallying 15.
The men will return to the court tomorrow for game two of the Lee Pfund Classic in the Consolation Game at 6 p.m. ET (vs. the loser of Wheaton/Piedmont).
