Young drops career-high 30 in win over Wheaton

WHEATON, Ill. — After falling to Alma College in the opening game of the Lee Pfund Classic, Heidelberg bounced back big as they took down host Wheaton College, 78-60. Junior Isaiah Young dropped a career-high 30 points in the win.

Young is the first 30 point scorer since Emmanuel Perdue had 33 in a loss to Marietta (1/15/22).

Eric Panning finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds -- his fourth consecutive double-double to start the year.

Heidelberg improves to 3-1 on the season while Wheaton falls to 1-3 overall.

Both teams got off to a slow start in the opening half, but Heidelberg would get on the board first following a Panning layup for two.The visitors stretched their lead to 6-2 after a pair of Isaiah Young free-throws with 16:12 on the clock.

The hosts did not fold and would come back to take an 11-10 lead after a driving layup from the Thunder. HU took the lead back 16-14 following a Tre Watkins jumper. Wheaton scored seven straight points to take the lead back 21-16, with seven minutes remaining in the half.

With under six minutes remaining in the first half, freshman Carter Pleiman drained a three-pointer to bring HU within one, 24-23. Young would tie things up 24-24 after splitting a pair of free-throws at the line.

The final five minutes of play were back and forth with each team trading baskets, but the Berg would hold the slight 34-33 edge going into halftime.

After the break, the Thunder knotted things at 38-38 after RJ Veliz knocked down a jumper. But Heidelberg would take the lead right back and extend their largest lead of the game to eight (50-42) following the hoop and harm from Young.

The hosts cut their deficit to five when Kyle Neibch hit one from behind the arc to make the score 50-45. With under 10 minutes to play, Panning knocked down two free-throws to stretch the lead to 58-50.

The Thunder cut the HU lead to just seven, but that would be the closest they get the rest of the way. Young stayed hot as he stretched the visitors lead to double-digits after a fastbreak layup for two.

Heidelberg went on an 11-2 run late in the second half that would help seal the 78-60 victory for the Student Princes.

As a team, HU finished 32-of-64 (50%) from the field and went 10-for-11 (90%) at the charity stripe. Wheaton turned the ball over 12 times to the Berg's 10. The visitors pulled down 39 rebounds in the win, 11 more than the hosts.

Panning is the first Student Prince to start a season with four double-doubles since at least the 2002-03 season. Myron Prewitt missed four straight double-doubles to start a season by one rebound in game three during the 2018-19 campaign.

Heidelberg will be off for a week before returning to action on November 29th as they host Trine in Seiberling Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
