Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Berg dominates on alumni day

TIFFIN, Ohio– The Heidelberg University men's basketball team snapped a three-game skid with a resounding win on Alumni Day, beating the Wilmington Quakers, 92-59. The Berg led wire-to-wire, outplaying the visitors in every facet of the game.

The 33-point win was Heidelberg's largest margin of victory over the Quakers ever, and just the program's 18th 30+ point conference win in its history.

Sophomore Isaiah Young led the way with a game-high 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting and 6-of-6 from the line. Young was one of four in double figures for the Student Princes, joining Zane Leitwein (13 points), Emmanuel Perdue and Brady Bosma (10 points apiece)

Heidelberg set the tone at the onset with a very tough three-point play by Perdue. After a defensive stop, Zane Leitwein drilled a 3-pointer.  The points came as part of a 9-0 run to start for the hosts.

Wilmington, 5-14 overall and 1-11 in the OAC, scratched their way back to within two at 11-9. Bosma, a freshman, provided a spark off the bench, burying a jumper that kicked off a game-changing 12-0 run that gave Heidelberg a 23-9 advantage.

The Student Princes went into halftime on a 7-0 run and led 47-22.

Heidelberg maintained their edge in the second half, committing a mere three turnovers despite removing their starters with more than nine minutes left.

Controlling the game on both sides, The Berg held the Quakers to shooting just 30.9% from the field, along with 14 turnovers.

With both teams unafraid of playing physically in the paint, HU's Amil Jenkins and Seth Hohman each had two blocks, and Eric Panning had a game-high nine boards.

Bryce Byrd led the Quakers with 16 points.

Heidelberg held a massive 50-37 edge on the glass.

More than 20 former Heidelberg basketball players were in attendance as part of the program's annual Alumni Day gathering.

With the Wilmington win in hand, the Student Princes will turn their attention on No. 8 John Carroll.  The Blue Streaks visit Seiberling Gymnasium on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest.
